Major points from Dr. Thomas Heaton’s 3:00pm News Conference at CalTech…all quotes are attributed to Dr. Thomas Heaton

  • The USGS is working to figure out which fault system this is exactly associated with
  • Two magnitude 3+ ?aftershocks, one 3.8 and the other 3.6
  • Heaviest shaking was “up under the region of Diamond Bar” (intersection of 57 and 60 freeways)
  • Magnitude 5.4 would screw up lots of stuff but is not a big deal in California (other than Brick Buildings)
  • Buildings built since 1930 should withstand this kind of earthquake
  • “We’ll Learn a lot” from this quake in fields of seismology equipment and other stuff
  • This is the first earthquake that has the advantage of all the new equipment deployed since the Northridge Quake in 1994
  • “Things like this help to remind Californians why we fund this kind of thing in the first place.”
  • Stress was not released by this. To relieve the stress on the plates it would require an ‘event’ 1,000 times this size or 10,000 of these.
  • Earthquake Early Warning system would not have helped for something like this.
  • Earthquake lasted less than 2 seconds at hte epicenter (deep under the earth) and then waves spread out and it lasted various lengths of times at various points

  • Nearly 30 aftershocks, was a 5.8 now a 5.4
  • Expecting reports of minor damage
  • All Local Officials are executing emergency response plans
  • First thing Governor did was call his Maria, at their family home in Brentwood
  • A reported asked him about Budget Negotiations and he didn’t say anything other than saying that he is working on it.

The Quake, did you feel it?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

I didn’t feel the chino hills earthquake but it did cause some damage at my home in Brentwood. This eathquake is the worst since the Northridge quake back in 1994. If you want more info mahalo has a great page on this “major seismic event”

Update: AT&T is denying the fact that their network for wireless in los angeles is down but I can tell you from experience it is down and geoff mordock is saying to use SMS instead but he seems stupid and in denial

Verizon is saying same thing. I can testify that our fios phone and Internet and television is working

Sprint’s saying that they had an 800% spike in call quantity in the thirty minutes after the quake. She is freely admitting to overload and is also recommending text messages also some idiots are calling 911 to get info
